MOVIE DESCRIPTION:
Photo of The Barbara Mandrell Story The Barbara Mandrell Story $9.99 'Get To The Heart' DVD (1997): A compelling biographical portrait of the talent and tribulations of Barbara Mandrell, one of country music's greatest entertainers.
At a young age, Barbara is discovered by a talent scout while playing the steel guitar at a trade show. She's playing there to bring attention to amplifiers that her father is selling. As a result, Barbara is in due course offered a show in Las Vegas. Her father, in full support, forms a family band and hires 21-year-old drummer, Ken Dudney. At only age 14, Barbara is smitten with Ken but it's not until she comes of age that she finally wins him over, along with her father. After they marry, Ken joins the navy and Barbara (Maureen McCormick) quits singing to become a full-time wife. However, after a visit to the Grand Ole Opry, Barbara is once again bitten by the bug and resumes singing. Ken eventually leaves the military to help her and to raise their newborn son.
The road is rocky at first, playing rowdy bars and traveling in a run-down bus. With perseverance she gets a recording contract, develops a dedicated following and in time gets her own weekly television show. By the time she has her second child it becomes a struggle to balance her career and her family. Being too much to manage efficiently Barbara decides to give up the television show and to go on tour again.
In 1984, while Barbara is driving with her children in the car, 8-year-old Jaime (Evan Rachel Wood) and 14-year-old Matt (Jesse Littlejohn), she is hit head-on by another car. Barbara's head, back and legs are severely injured in the near-fatal accident. During her slow and painful recovery, Barbara becomes depressed, often displaying erratic behavior. Her son grows bitter towards her and legal complications now jeopardize her reputation. Little by little, Barbara regains her fighting spirit and patches things up with her family. She returns to the spotlight with a successful 1986 live show, as well as a book and television appearances in the following years.
Hers is more than a story about a superstar entertainer, an officer's wife and a loving mother--Barbara Mandrell's story is about a triumphant survivor.
