The film is set in a small Georgia town in 1948. It follows the life of Buster Lane (Jan Michael Vincent), a handsome, popular high-school senior. He's is engaged to be married to his high-school sweetheart Margie Hooks (Pamela-Sue Martin). He is the 'big man on campus' and the leader of his group of friends. Buster, though, is different from these other young men.
Buster's friends, being sexually repressed, often visit a girl from an underprivileged background named Billie-Jo Truluck (Joan Goodfellow) who is a good soul, painfully shy, reclusive and she dourly gives the boys what they want because it's the only way she knows to get the attention she craves; from anyone. Billie-Jo is for the most part alone, lonely and unfamiliar to the ways of the world. All she knows of is the small piece of land she lives on with her parents and maybe a few stories she overhears in school.
Meanwhile, Buster becomes disenchanted with Margie's insistence to maintain her virginity until they're married, and he too begins seeing Billie in secret. In the beginning, he sees Billie just for the same reasons as the other guys, but eventually finds himself falling in love with her. Buster is so taken with Billie that he decides to break off his engagement with Margie to be with Billie. Billie finds another lease on life with Buster, and they are happy for the first time in their lives. Despite the disapproval of the local townspeople, his friends and family, Buster breaks his engagement with Margie and begins to seriously date Billie. The two young lovers are wonderfully happy, discovering the joys of first love. There's a moment when Buster buys Billie a new dress for a special occasion; Billie has never had anyone treat her this way before; special. She is so very touched and what follows is very moving. A beautiful story of true love … Happiness for them, though, is short-lived.
Buster's friends are extremely jealous that they cannot have Billie for their own use anymore, and decide to teach Buster a lesson. They corner Billie one day when she is out, and when she refuses to submit to them, they rape and beat her. Buster eventually finds out … but for the rest of the story you will need to watch the movie. Vincent and Goodfellow are excellent as the star-crossed lovers, bringing youthful exuberance and heartfelt desire to the screen. A very touching and beautiful story of love for all the right reasons.
