A veritable master of the trade, an aging con-artist (aka a 'flim-flam man') Mordecai Jones (George C. Scott) has taken part in his fair share of swindles. When he happens upon a young army deserter, Curley (Michael Sarrazin), Jones decides to pass on his knowledge of swindling to the likable novice. As the two blaze through the rural south, Sheriff Slade (Harry Morgan) is in hot pursuit of the pair. Curley meets up with a girl, Bonnie Lee Packard (Sue Lyon), a girl of privilege. Bonnie helps the fleeing duo stay one-step ahead of the sheriff. Along the way, as Curley and Bonnie find something more in one another than just friends, Curley soon begins to question his newfound profession.
