Melody Parris, a perfume counter clerk, feels stuck. Her job is uninspiring, and her long-term boyfriend is commitment-phobic, leaving her life feeling firmly in neutral. Desperate for a change, she impulsively makes a detailed Christmas wish list and deposits it in the department store Santa's mailbox, jokingly wondering, "What do I have to lose?"

Melody quickly finds herself with a promotion, a luxury car, and a glamorous new suitor.
